Welcome to Cypress College news feeds. The links at the left allow you to subscribe to news from the college. The subscription is similar to a newsletter that's delivered to your e-mail box. Subscriptions are quick and easy.

Why do it this way?

RSS offers an easy way to check in on news from a variety of sources (NPR and AP news, for example) all in one stop. In other words, you can catch up on the things that are important to you without having to visit dozens of Web sites daily. One quick glance and you're up to date. If you think it's a pain to visit a Web site only to find there's nothing new, then RSS is an ideal tool. RSS jumps up and says: "I've got something new" and provides a simple headline. There's also a brief description and a link to more information.

How does is work?

The Cypress College news feeds use a technology called "RSS" — short for Really Simple Syndication. RSS links are written in XML. These two acronyms are the most common way this type of technology is identified on the Web. You may have noticed an orange button like this   XML logo   on various Web pages. XML requires a news reader such as FeedDemon for Windows or NetNewsWire for the Mac OS. To sign up for a news feed, you commonly drag the XML logo to the "subscriptions" window of your news reader. You can also right-click on the XML logo to copy the address and then paste it into the subscription window.

Your input!

Using RSS and XML is something new for Cypress College. Given it's rapid growth on the Web, it appears to be a technology that's both catching on and beneficial to readers. We're starting out by offering the headlines from the front page of the Web site as a news feed. Since this is where we announce things like the availability of the class schedule and other vital information, we feel it will have broad appeal. We also offer photo galleries from the construction sites and of special events.

We'll gauge their use and base any future expansion based on that. We also welcome your feedback.
