The Courses

 

Fall Semester – Semester 1

English 60 (Preparation for College Writing) – This is a three (3) unit developmental writing course that counts toward a student’s GPA, but it does not transfer.  Completion of this course is required for English 100.  Mrs. Kimberly Beatty is the instructor.  This course is late start course that begins the first week of September.  All readings are from the Black perspective.

 

Counseling 150 (Academic and Life Success) – This is a three (3) unit course that provides students with knowledge, information, and practical skills to better understand themselves as students, people and members of society.  This course transfers to CSU in the general elective category.  This course is taught by Renee Ssensalo Monday and Wednesday 9:30-10:50.

 

Library 100 (Introduction to Research) - This is a one (1) unit course designed to introduce students to traditional and electronic library research tools and resources including the Internet.  This course transfers to UC and CSU.  This is a late start course beginning in early February and meets from 12:00-12:50 on Tuesday and Thursday.

 

Spring Semester – Semester 2

English 100 (College Writing) -This is a three (3) unit college level course in written communication.  It is designed to develop reading, critical thinking, and writing strategies necessary for academic success.  This course transfers to UC with a credit limitation, satisfies the CSU and AA general education degree requirement, and IGETC.  This course is taught by Kimberly Beatty and meets Tuesday and Thursday 9:00-10:50.  All readings and research are from the Black perspective.

 

Speech 100 (Speech Communication) – This is a three (3) unit course that introduces students to fundamentals and principles which underlie effective speech communication.  This course has a UC Credit Limitation, but transfers to CSU satisfying the general education requirement, satisfies general education for AA degree, and IGETC. This course is taught by Micheal Brydges Tuesday and Thursday 12:00 – 1:20

 

Ethnic Studies 129 (Introduction to African-American Studies) – This is a (3) unit course that serves as an introduction to African-American studies through an interdisciplinary approach of studying the various experiences of African Americans and to examine their contributions to American society and culture.  This course transfers to UC and CSU satisfying the general education requirement, satisfies cultural diversity requirement, and IGETC. This course is taught by Daniel Lind on Mondays and Wednesdays at 9:30 to 10:50.

 


Fall Semester – Semester 3

Ethnic Studies 130 (African American History I) – This is a three (3) unit course that surveys the African-American experience in the United States from its African roots to 1865.  This course transfers to UC and CSU, Satisfies general education units toward the AA degree, IGETC, CSU transfer requirement in American History, and Cultural Diversity.  This course is taught by Daniel Lind on Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:30 to 10:50.

 

English 102 (Introduction to Literature) - This is a three (3) unit course and a continuation of English 100.  Its content introduces students to authors of fiction, drama, poetry and film.  This course transfers to UC and CSU, Satisfies general education units toward the AA degree, IGETC, and the Reading Proficiency Requirement.  This course is taught by Kimberly Beatty Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.  All readings and research are from the Black perspective.
