Chargers Can’t Pull off the Upset

Williams scored a career high 20 points Friday night.
Cypress lost by 17 to the ninth ranked Owls.

Cypress, Calif. – The Chargers hosted the ninth ranked Citrus Owls Friday in the hopes of pulling off an upset before heading into the holidays. Cypress could not get their momentum going trailing the entire game for the eventual 77-94 loss. Freshman guard Clinton Williams came off the bench to score a career high 20 points going 6 for 11 from the field.

Cypress lost their foothold early getting outscored 21-6 in the first eight minutes of play. The Chargers woke up but could just keep pace with Citrus finishing the half down twelve, 35-47. Citrus came out strong again taking a big 27 point lead with thirteen minutes left in the game. Cypress was able to get one good run in the second half going on a 9-1 run started by Williams’ three point bucket at the 7:21 mark. Cypress was able to get the point margin down to 14 with two minutes left before eventually losing by 17. Citrus took control of the key outscoring Cypress by 34 in the paint making all the difference in the 17 point loss.

Freshman guard Eric Butler was the only other Charger in double digits scoring 16 points while adding 3 assists, 2 steals, and 5 rebounds while shooting 60% from the field. Freshman Kourtney Maxim and Jeff Comminey combined for a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Cypress has a long break for the holidays before heading south to San Diego Mesa to face Victor Valley. Victor Valley is 3-9 coming off of an 81-88 loss to the Irvine All-Stars to go two and out in the Gaucho Classic. The two start play up again Thursday December 28th at San Diego Mesa at 4:00 pm.
