Cypress Drops Second Conference Game

Carbajal reached a double-double Friday night.
Chargers fall to 0-2 in conference.

Costa Mesa, Calif. – Cypress lost an early second half lead and trailed within ten the rest of the way to lose to Orange Coast. The Chargers played it close all game but could not get over the hump at the end losing to the Pirates 72-66. Freshman center Rodrigo Carbajal hit his second career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Cypress started behind but took a brief one point lead early in the first half. OCC came back and held the lead throughout the first half but Cypress would not let them get any further than an eight point gap. Cypress took the lead in the second half on an 11-2 run to start the half. Orange Coast came back with a 6-0 run of their own to take the lead for good. The teams battled from there as Cypress stayed close. Carbajal scored a jumper with just 1:15 left on the clock to cut the Pirate lead to two. The Pirates came right back to score and Cypress was forced to foul for the eventual six point loss.

Freshman guard Eric Butler also scored 12 points Friday going 4 for 5 from the field with 8 rebounds. Freshman guard Khalif Boyd was the third 12 point scorer for Cypress in addition to 4 assists and 4 steals. Garret Reza and Dwayne Wright combined for 16 points and nine rebounds.

Cypress has a bye Wednesday and does not play again until next Friday. Cypress will face off with defending state champion Fullerton. Fullerton is 9-12 this year and will play Orange Coast Wednesday. The Chargers host the Hornets Friday at 5:30 pm.
