Cypress Flirts with another Upset But Can’t Close the Deal

Cypress, Calif. – Cypress faced a tough match-up Wednesday night facing the first place, fourth ranked Gauchos of Saddleback. The Chargers threatened another top ranked team in an effort similar to their conference opening game against top ranked Riverside. The Chargers played the Gauchos close until losing ground towards the end in a 45-64 loss. Freshman guard Clinton Williams scored 14 points and collected 6 rebounds to lead Cypress.

Saddleback jumped out to the lead early and never let go. Despite the Gaucho lead, Cypress kept up and threatened trailing within double digits most of the first half and finishing the half down 26-34. Cypress chipped away in the second half cutting the lead to five at the 12:50 mark. Saddleback then went on a 10-2 run to take the 13 point lead and extended it from there to hand Cypress the eventual 19 point loss. The difference was made inside and in transition as Cypress was outscored 34-18 in the paint, 20-8 on second chance points, and 14-4 on fast break points.

Freshman guard Eric Butler was Cypress’s only other player in double digits with 10 points with 5 rebounds. Freshman guard Khalif Boyd finished with an all-around game with 6 points, 3 assists, and 6 steals. Sophomore forward Jeff Comminey finished with 8 points and 4 rebounds while freshman forward Rodrigo Carbajal added 5 points and 6 rebounds.

The Chargers finish the first round of conference with a record of 0-5 and move on to play Riverside again. Riverside is ranked second in Southern California and second in conference with a record of 5-1. The last time they played, Cypress threatened the Tigers but lost 46-52. The teams meet up again Friday at 7:30 pm at Riverside.
