Santa Barbara, Calif. – Cypress travelled north to Santa Barbara Friday expecting to compete in three games. After a disappointing loss and a second close loss, Cypress was eliminated from the tournament after just two games. The Chargers lost to Oxnard in the opening round 91-75 and then was edged out 90-86 in game two against Allan Hancock. Freshman forward Sean Starkey led Cypress in scoring over the weekend with 18 against Oxnard and 23 against Allan Hancock.
The Chargers were outmatched in game one unable to hold down opposing scoring as Oxnard shot 57% from the field. Cypress had four Chargers in double digits with Starkey in the lead with 18. Sophomore guard Khalif Boyd followed with 17 and three assists. Sophomore guard Eric Butler had 13 with seven rebounds while freshman forward Devon McDonald finished with 12 points and a team high eight rebounds.
Cypress moved on to the consolation bracket Saturday facing Allan Hancock. After taking a 45-38 lead at halftime, Allan Hancock bounced back with a 12-2 run to start the second half. Cypress chased from there but was unable to catch them losing by a slim four points. Starkey led Cypress with 23 and seven rebounds. Boyd followed with 19 while freshman guard DuWayne King had 15 points and four rebounds.
Cypress falls to 4-8 in the season and has a few days off before returning home for their second home game hosting L.A. Harbor. Harbor is 2-9 so far this season coming off of an 85-67 loss to Glendale. Cypress will meet up with Harbor Wednesday night at 7:00 pm at Cypress.
