Chargers Coast Their Way to First OEC Win

Costa Mesa, Calif. – After dropping their first conference game at home Wednesday night, the Chargers came back Friday with a vengeance taking on the Pirates of Orange Coast. Cypress took the lead and held on to take their first conference win 97-72. Sophomore guard Khalif Boyd paced the Chargers with 23 points, two assists, and two steals.

Cypress took charge early jumping out to a 22-9 lead after just five minutes of play. Cypress utilized the cushion throughout the first half to build a 21 point lead at half, 55-34 shooting 64% through the half. The Chargers coasted through the second half maintaining their lead for the win.

Freshman forward Sean Starkey led Cypress in scoring again with 25 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Freshman forward Devon McDonald neared a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Eric Butler also had 12 points adding four rebounds. Freshman guard DuWayne King led Cypress on the boards with 11 rebounds and dished out six assists.

Cypress improves to 10-11 and an even 1-1 in conference. Cypress has a bye Wednesday and will continue action again Friday back on the road against Saddleback. The Gauchos are 7-13 and 0-2 in conference. The two will meet up Friday at Saddleback at 5:30 pm.
