Irvine, Calif. – The Chargers went on the road Friday to face the second place Lasers of Irvine Valley hoping to play spoiler with an upset. Cypress did what they could but could not stop the high scoring Lasers losing 91-62. Sophomore guard Eric Butler led Cypress with 13 points and six rebounds.
Cypress fell behind early allowing 43 first half points while only scoring 21. The Chargers stepped up their scoring in the second half but could make up any ground falling to IVC by 29 points. Freshman guard Devon McDonald followed Butler in scoring with 12 and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Khalif Boyd was right behind him with 11 points and nine rebounds with three assists.
The Chargers fall to 14-15 and 4-5 in conference. Cypress is one game ahead of Saddleback in fourth place in conference. With the Gauchos breathing down Cypress’s back, the pressure is on Cypress to pull out an upset win in the final week of the regular season. Cypress starts with first place Fullerton Wednesday. Fullerton is 22-5 and 9-1 in conference. The last time they met, Cypress lost 82-68. They meet up again Wednesday at 7:30 pm at Fullerton.
