Cypress Picks up First Win of the Season

Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. – The Chargers started their season stumbling but picked up steam with a blowout win over Citrus Saturday. After an ugly first half, the Chargers started to play their game to finish in a blowout 91-45. Redshirt freshman Yanet Enriquez came off the bench to pick up her first career double-double scoring 11 points while handing out 11 assists to lead the Chargers.
Cypress started slow against the unranked Owls allowing Citrus to stay in the game allowing Citrus to take the lead at the 12:47 mark. The Chargers took the lead back quickly with a three-pointer by sophomore forward Kishawn Hill. The Owls would not go away staying within ten points and finishing the half 44-36 in favor of Cypress. The second half started shaky as well letting Citrus get to within five as far as eight minutes into the half. The Chargers took off from there going on a 21-2 run to take Citrus out of the game. Cypress held on from there for their first win of the season.
Sophomore point guard Corianne Felix proved to be another unselfish guard for Cypress picking up 8 assists while scoring 9 points of her own. Sophomore guard Brae Butler was Cypress’s leading scorer with 14 points while grabbing 5 steals. Freshman guard Tonisha Phelps reached double digits for the first time in her collegiate career scoring 13 points with 3 steals. Sophomore guard Marinna Figueroa and Hill combined for 17 points to round out a balanced front court attack for Cypress. Sophomore forward Brandi Thomas worked for Cypress inside pulling down 6 rebounds while scoring 10 points.
Cypress improves to 1-4 and have a few days to prepare for the annual rivalry face-off with Cerritos College. Cypress won last year’s match-up with a last second shot at their place. Cerritos is ranked 12th in Southern California and is currently 3-3 this season. The Falcons are coming off of a four-point loss to Antelope Valley and are on a three game losing streak. The two face off in their annual pre-Thanksgiving battle Wednesday at 7:00 pm at Cypress.
