Promising Start Turns to Disappointing End in Loss to Fullerton

Fullerton, Calif. – Cypress visited Fullerton Wednesday for a rivalry rematch against the Hornets. Cypress jumped out early, but the Hornet offense proved too much to handle as the Chargers lost their hold on the lead to lose 69-81. Sophomore guard Corianne Felix paced the Chargers offensively going 3 for 6 from the three-point line for 16 points.
The Chargers were able to start with the momentum going up as much as six early in the game before giving up the lead in the middle of the half. Cypress was able to get back on track towards the end of the half going up as much as seven at the 7:11 mark. The Charger defense faltered giving up a 14-2 run to lose the lead and go down by five. The half eventually ended with the Hornets in charge by four. The start of the second half just got worse for Cypress giving up a 12-2 run to start the half and go down by 14. Cypress would not allow another run from there but also could not generate a run of their own as seemingly all of Cypress’s scores were matched by the Hornets for the eventual twelve point loss.
Sophomore guard Brae Butler put up a game high 18 points and 3 steals while going 10 for 10 from the free-throw line. Freshman forward Letisha Batiste added 10 points going 5 for 7 from the field with 5 rebounds. Freshman forward Saw-Ann Bryan neared a double-double with 11 points and 8 rebounds. Guards Marissa Bravo and Tonisha Phelps combined for 11 points, 6 assists, and 9 rebounds.
Cypress falls to 5-6 in conference in fifth place. They have a day off to bounce back for Irvine Valley. The last time these teams met, it ended in an overtime victory for Cypress. The Lasers are 2-9 in conference in seventh place in conference coming off of a 74-38 loss to Orange Coast. Cypress will try to sweep Irvine Valley Friday at 5:30 at Cypress.
