Huntington Beach, Calif. – Last time the Chargers faced the Rustlers, Cypress won by 33. The last time Cypress lost to Golden West was 2003. Perhaps those two reasons were enough for Cypress to let down their guard and fall to Golden West 70-55. Freshman point guard Michelle Salemi paced Cypress with 12 points and three assists.
Cypress started with the lead and expected to keep it but the Rustlers fought back taking the lead after a few minutes. The Rustlers surged ahead going on a 15 point run to take the 14 point lead with nine minutes remaining in the first half. The Chargers were unable to catch them ending in the half down thirteen. The Chargers were able to chip away just to an eight point deficit but were kept at bay for the eventual fifteen point loss.
Freshman guard Sequana Norris led Cypress in scoring with 19 plus seven steals and four assists. Sophomore forward Saw-Ann Bryan, and freshmen guards Tara Smith and Nyesha Green scored seven points each.
The Chargers fall to 7-17 and 3-7 in conference. They have the weekend off before preparing to host their final home game of the season against Saddleback. The Chargers upset Saddleback the last time around 59-57. Cypress hosts the Gauchos Wednesday at 5:30 pm.
