Cypress, Calif. – Golden West came to Cypress as the clear favorites and left with their first conference loss victims to Cypress’s 4-1 victory. Cypress took their second conference win in a row and handed the formerly first place Rustlers their first conference loss. The turning point came in the 60th minute when freshman forward Pedro Ochoa snuck one past the goalie on the ground on a penalty kick to take the lead for good.

Cypress was able to strike first in the 11th minute with a long goal booted in to the upper right corner by freshman forward Jay Kinnear to take the early 1-0 lead. Golden West battled back with a goal of their own off of a corner kick rebound header to tie the game at one at half. The Rustlers missed on some golden opportunities to take the lead and looked poise to score. The tide turned in the 60th minute when a Rustler was red carded in the penalty box giving Ochoa the penalty kick and leaving Golden West a man down.

The momentum was on the Chargers’ side and they capitalized as freshman forward Christian Ortiz scored off a header with an assist from freshman midfielder Marco Vargas in the 72nd minute for the commanding 3-1 lead. The physical play continued leaving Cypress with a free kick from just outside the box. Freshman midfielder Edgar Mendoza floated the kick above everyone’s head including the goalie giving Cypress the fourth and final goal. Play ended with just a few minutes left when a scuffle broke out and Golden West refused to continue leaving Cypress with the big upset win. Freshman keeper Giovanni Guzman played the entire game and picked up six saves.

Cypress improves their record to 6-4-3 and 2-1-1 overall. The Chargers head back on the road to Riverside next. The two face off Tuesday at Riverside at 3:00 pm.
