Last Minute Heroics Lift Chargers to a Win

Cypress, Calif. – The Chargers decided to keep their fans in suspense Friday afternoon as they scored a goal late in the game to give the Chargers the 2-1 victory. Cypress scored early, Fullerton tied, and Cypress struck back again to finish the Hornets off for the win. Freshman forward Christian Ortiz scored the winning goal propelling the Chargers to victory and taking the team lead in goals scored this season.

Cypress was able to strike first when freshman midfielder Edgar Mendoza scored with an assist from sophomore midfielder Marvin Gordon giving the Chargers a 1-0 lead into halftime. Fullerton was able to match the score with a penalty kick in the second half tying the game. Cypress would not settle for the tie as Ortiz scored the winning goal with an assist from freshman defender Fred Vasquez. Freshman keeper Giovanni Guzman held Fullerton at one goal with nine saves.

Cypress heads on the road again traveling to Santiago Canyon Tuesday. The Hawks are 1-4 in conference in eighth place coming off of a 0-2 loss to Irvine Valley. The teams face off Tuesday at Santiago Canyon at 3:00 pm.
