Chargers Holds on for another Narrow Victory

Cypress picks up their second straight conference victory.

Orange, Calif. – Cypress was able to strike early with two goals before Santiago Canyon could score to give the Chargers the 2-1 victory. This is Cypress’s second straight conference victory which lifts the Chargers to the third place spot in the Orange Empire Conference. Freshman captain Adam Sonntag led the defense to hold the Hawks scoreless until late in the game.

Cypress started the scoring when freshman midfielder Bernardo Munoz scored his first collegiate goal with an assist from freshman forward Christian Ortiz giving Cypress the 1-0 halftime lead. The Chargers added another when freshman forward Juan Razo with a rare goalie assist from freshman goalie Giovanni Guzman on a long punt. Santiago Canyon was able to score late in the game but Cypress held on for the victory. Guzman finished with four saves.

The Chargers are headed into the second half of Orange Empire Conference play Friday staying on the road to face off with Irvine Valley again. Irvine Valley is 5-1-1 in conference coming off of a loss to first place Santa Ana. IVC’s only tie in conference came from the Chargers in a 1-1 tie. The teams face off again Friday at 3:00 pm at Irvine Valley.
