Cypress, Calif. – Cypress went into Tuesday’s game as heavy underdog’s to the first place Dons of Santa Ana. Cypress played a tough defensive game holding off Santa Ana’s high powered offense for sixty minutes before losing a man to a red card and quickly giving up the Dons only goal for the 0-1 loss. Freshman keeper Giovanni Guzman was put to work all game long picking up six saves in the defensive stand.

Cypress held on tight against the Dons who lead the conference in goals made by 24 goals. The Chargers forced several near misses but frustrated Santa Ana with a 0-0 tie at the half. “Guzman stepped up in the game” said head coach Rod Petkovic, “everyone stuck to the game plan and played great”. The plan was working well until the sixtieth minute when a Cypress player earned a red card leaving the Chargers shorthanded. Shortly after his ejection, Santa Ana found their opportunity to score. Cypress would come back in aggressive fashion with several shots on goal including one from sophomore defender Luis Macias which bounced off the top post. Unfortunately none of the attempts were converted leaving the Chargers with the one goal loss in a hard fought effort.

Cypress maintains their spot at third because of a Golden West tie. In the homestretch battle for a playoff spot, the Chargers will be looking for as many wins as possible in their five remaining regular season matches. The Chargers will now look forward to Friday against the fifth place Pirates of OCC. Orange Coast is 3-3-3 in conference coming off of a 5-1 win over Santiago Canyon. The last time these two teams met, the Chargers won 1-0. The teams face off Friday at 3:00 pm at Cypress.
