Cypress, Calif. – Nasser Sarfaraz debuted as the Charger’s new head coach Friday hoping to even Cypress’s early record after a one goal loss earlier in the week. Cypress fell behind early and could not catch up losing to visiting Mira Costa 1-3. Sophomore defender Abraham Esparza punched in the first Cypress goal of the season in the second half heading in a corner kick to the far post for the Charger’s only goal. It was also Esparza’s first collegiate goal.
It looked like Cypress was holding down the fort keeping the Spartans scoreless through the first 45 minutes. Unfortunately for the Chargers, Mira Costa took advantage of the minute of stoppage time for a quick goal off a long throw in to end the half. Mira Costa kept their momentum going with two quick goals in the 61st and 65th minutes putting Cypress behind by a big three goal margin. The Chargers would not give in as freshman midfielder Jesse Pridmore placed a corner kick for Esparza to score to prevent the shut out in the 78th minute. Sophomore keeper Giovanni Guzman played the first half collecting two saves while freshman Carlos Gutierrez made his collegiate debut with one save.
Cypress has the weekend off before heading on their first road trip to face Southwestern College. The two will meet up Tuesday at 4:00 pm at Southwestern.
