Cypress Earns First 2007 Win 4-3

Cypress, Calif. – Cypress was still looking for their first win this season as they hosted College of the Desert in their fifth game of the season. The Chargers came out strong and held on for a narrow victory 4-3 over the visiting Roadrunners. Freshman forward Ricardo Gonzalez led Cypress with two goals in the game and became the team’s goal leader with three on the season. Fellow freshman, midfielder Jesus Lopez, paced Cypress as well with three assists.

The Chargers started strong challenging the Desert goalie and punching one through at the nine minute mark as sophomore midfielder Julio Reynoso scored from freshman midfielder Gerardo Garcia. The action continued fifteen minutes later as Gonzalez scored his first goal of the game along with Lopez’s first assist of the game giving Cypress a commanding 2-0 lead. The tide turned from there as Desert scored one in the 37th minute and ended the half 2-1 in favor of Cypress. The Roadrunners took control again with a goal ten minutes into the second half tying the game.

Cypress was determined to earn their first win and took back the momentum and the lead with a goal from Gonzalez and an assist from Lopez at the 61st minute. The Chargers scored a much needed insurance goal in the 89th minute from sophomore defender Abraham Esparza with another assist from Lopez. Desert was able to punch another one in to cut the lead to one but it was too late as the ref blew the whistle immediately after signaling the end of play. Sophomore goalie Giovanni Guzman played the majority of the game making five saves. Freshman keeper Carlos Gutierrez played ten minutes and made two saves.

Cypress heads right back on the road this week to face Cuyamaca on Friday. The Coyotes are 1-2 and are coming off of a 0-2 loss to Santiago Canyon. The teams will face off Friday at Cuyamaca at 4:00 pm.
