Cypress comes back to tie the Dons.

Cypress, Calif. – Cypress has lost every game to Santa Ana since 1990 when the Chargers won a game against then named Rancho Santiago via forfeit. The 2007 Chargers broke that streak Friday upsetting the perennial powerhouses and defending conference champs Santa Ana with a tie at 1-1. Sophomore midfielder Andres Valencia scored the game tying goal for Cypress.

The Charger defense worked overtime Friday defending against a slew of Santa Ana attacks holding the Dons scoreless after the first half leaving the game tied at zero. The Dons slipped through early in the second half as a Santa Ana player scored off the crossbar taking the lead. Cypress would not give in continuing to defend their goal and making some breaks at the goal. The efforts paid off at the 64th minute as freshman midfielder Gerardo Garcia broke down the right side of the field taking a shot. The Dons goalie blocked the shot but the ball landed directly in front of Valencia who knocked it in for the goal and the tie. Freshman keeper Carlos Gutierrez played his first full match of the year making eight saves including some spectacular game saving saves to preserve the tie.

Cypress’s record moves to 3-5-2 overall and 0-1-1 in conference. They will take the weekend off and prepare for Tuesday where they will head on the road to face Santiago Canyon. The Hawks are 6-1-1 and 1-0 in conference. The two face off at Santiago Canyon at 3:00 pm on Tuesday.
