Last Minute Goal Saves Cypress from Loss

Cypress, Calif. – It was the battle of the winless as Fullerton visited Cypress as the last two teams in conference without a win faced off. Cypress was hoping for an upset of the eleventh ranked Hornets but instead settled for the tie 2-2. Freshman defender Paulo Roldan headed in the game tying goal in the 90th minute preventing the Cypress loss just in time.
Cypress started slow and let the Fullerton offense slip by as they scored first taking the 1-0 lead in the 28th minute, 1-0 is where the half would end. Cypress started early in the second half as sophomore midfielder Andres Valencia scored on a diagonal pass from freshman defender Erick Solis. The Chargers attacked the Fullerton goal in the second half forcing six Fullerton goalie saves and missed close on several opportunities. The Hornets took advantage of a long break in the 58th minute taking the lead back 2-1. After several close calls, the time was winding down but Cypress was not done. After earning a corner kick, freshman midfielder Gerardo Garcia placed one on the far post where Roldan was waiting to head it in tying it up at two. Freshman goalie Carlos Gutierrez and sophomore Giovanni Guzman split time in the goal collecting a combined six saves.
The Chargers’ record moves to 3-6-3 and 0-2-2 in conference. Cypress has the weekend off before going on the road to face Orange Coast for the first time this season. The Pirates are 1-2-1 in conference coming off of a 3-2 loss to Santa Ana. The two meet up at Orange Coast at 3:00 pm on Tuesday.
