Cypress, Calif. – Cypress and Santiago Canyon faced off in a delayed game Monday due to the fires. The contest looked close and Cypress looked like it had a shot at its first conference win or at least prevent another loss until a questionable late game play did in Cypress allowing four Hawks goals for the 5-1 loss. Freshman forward Max Clark scored his first collegiate goal and the only Charger goal.
The game started with promise as Cypress took the early lead with the first goal. Clark scored in the seventh minute with a cross-field pass from sophomore forward Jesse Pridmore. The Cypress lead would not last as Santiago Canyon scored in the fourteenth minute knotting it up at one a piece. The teams would battle back and forth and no one would budge for the next 66 minutes of play until a foul just outside the Cypress box. As the Cypress defenders were told to back away from the ball, SCC put the ball into play and scored before anyone knew what had happened. After some arguing with the referees, the game pressed on. With the Hawks energized, and the Chargers defeated, SCC piled on another goal just two minutes later. Two more followed as the once competitive game ended in a 5-1 rout. Sophomore keeper Giovanni Guzman was put to work making ten saves on the day.
Cypress has no time to recover heading directly into tomorrow’s action hosting their final home game of the season. Cypress will host the Tigers of Riverside whom they lost to 4-1 last time around. The teams will face off again Tuesday at 3:00 pm at Cypress.
