Title V Learning Communities

The Development Program for Faculty | Dental Talk | Reading Between the Lines UTAP: College Readiness & Freshman Experience

The Learning Community Development Program

The Cypress College Title V Learning Community Development Program (LCDP) is an opportunity for instructors to partner with a faculty member from another department in order to help students make meaningful connections in both your courses. You will build a supportive relationship with your partner as you create integrated curriculum that promotes active learning and student achievement.

In the LDCP you will collaborate with a colleague, expand your repertoire of teaching approaches, revise course content, and earn a $1000 stipend or 2 equivalent units.

The LCDP BASE MODEL: Two courses for which students co-register. Faculty coordinate syllabi and interdisciplinary assignments, but teach their classes separately.

After successfully completing the LCDP you will qualify to teach in a 2-faculty learning community and earn $1,000 or 2 equivalent units.

Why Create a Learning Community with a Faculty Partner?

• To improve student retention
• To increase student achievement
• To broaden your pedagogical repertoire
• To collaborate meaningfully with a faculty partner
• To create coherent linkages for students through interdisciplinary study

To Apply

Find a partner! Tip: Select a compatible partner whose course and personality fits naturally with yours. Then email Michael Brydges the Title V Learning Communities Coordinator for more information on how to enroll in LCDP.

Fall 2007 Learning Communities

Dental Talk

A Dental Assisting & Interpersonal Communication Learning Community

Dental Talk is a learning community de-signed to help you integrate core dental assisting skills with the essential interper-sonal communication skills you need to be an effective dental assistant. Dental Talk integrates a Dental Assisting course with an Interpersonal Communication course in order for you to be able to build strong and positive health service relationships with your future patients using proven interper-sonal communication techniques.

As part of the dental office team you will be required not only to recognize the anxiety and fear people sometime experience dur-ing a visit, but also use your empathy, compassion and communication skills to make each visit as pleasant and comfort-able as possible. The skills you learn this semester can very well determine whether those future office visits end as a good or a bad experience for the patient.

UTAP

UTAP logo graduation cap

The Cypress College University Transfer Achievement Program (UTAP) is a close-knit learning community of students, instructors, counselors, and support staff who are dedicated to working together to create a successful first year experience for incoming freshman. UTAP has two year-long freshman learning communities, Freshman Experience and College Readiness. These UTAP learning community programs are cohort-based, meaning students all take the same core courses which in turn share a common theme, common goals, and integrated activities. Cohort-based learning allows UTAP to provide a supportive environment with many opportunities for close academic and social interactions among all members of the learning community.

As a transfer success program, UTAP provides academic and support services which enable students to achieve their academic goals. UTAP is designed to help students make a successful transition from high school to community college to four-year colleges and universities.

Benefits Of UTAP

UTAP students are guaranteed enrollment in English and general education classes. In UTAP, students have the opportunity to work closely with UTAP instructors who assist them in mastering concepts and skills necessary for successful course completion. In conjunction with the English classes, students receive additional assistance from PAL tutors who provide integrated tutorial services through the Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Program. Peer mentors also work closely with the UTAP students to assist them in acclimating to the college environment. Additional academic support is provided by an in-depth introduction to campus resources and support services. Finally, as a cohort-based program, UTAP students have the opportunity to form close friendships with other students in the program.

Requirements For UTAP Participation

To join a UTAP cohort, students must enroll full-time at Cypress College, be eligible for either English 58 (ENGL 058 C) or English 60 (ENGL 060 C), and be willing to make a commitment to a one-year learning experience.

How To Apply to UTAP

Interested? To apply, first take a look at the UTAP Student Contract and then download the application. As part of the application process, you will also be asked to submit Cypress College assessment results or SAT scores that show proof of eligibility for ENGL 058 C or 060 C. When you have these forms together, you should submit the application in person to the UTAP Office so we can meet you. This will give us the opportunity to present the program to you in greater depth.
